Google Adds Quick Facts to Maps

Have you ever wanted to explore a destination from the comfort of your home, office or on the go? The recent Google Maps update now allows you to save locations that you'd like to visit and access the street view of many locations around the world.

Now Google has added an additional feature called Quick Facts for desktop users looking for some extra factoids in their search.

Where is Google Getting the Data?

Google is pulling the information from Wikipedia and other data sources used to power Google's Knowledge Graph.

What Do Quick Facts Look Like?

When you search for a location in Google Maps you'll notice a small tab under your results labeled Quick Facts. For example, as a Minnesotan I was curious to know what else I could find out about Target Field (where the Minnesota Twins play). Quick Facts let's you quickly discover the capacity of the stadium as well as who the architect was.

A Google Maps search of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco also shares some interesting tidbits including:

  • Total length: 8,980'
  • Longest Span: 4,200'
  • Date Construction Started: 1933

While you can also see quick facts for other notable places around the globe, such as the Giza Pyramids, Stonehenge, and the Taj Mahal, at this point it doesn't seem as though there are any Quick Facts for retailers or restaurants. Could we see that in the future?
