SEO, Content Marketing & Social: Hot Topics Ahead of SES Toronto 2013

Four groups of Canadian marketing professionals are set to converge at SES Toronto for a collaborative get-together with SES attendees, speakers, and exhibitors. Before we get there, the group organizers discuss the dynamic digital landscape.

SES Toronto Networking

Four groups of Canadian marketing professionals plan to attend the SES Toronto networking cocktail reception on Thursday, June 13 for a collaborative get-together with SES attendees, speakers and exhibitors. This will be the first time that this many groups of marketing professionals, brand advertisers, agencies, and business leaders from Ontario have converged at one industry networking event.

The groups from Canada that will meetup at #SESTO are:

Search Engine Watch (SEW) asked the organizers of these groups three questions about hot industry topics and here are the answers that Soojin C. (SC) of mindSHIFT, Nicholas Klassen (NK) of the Toronto Content Marketing Association, Alex Rascanu (AR) of Inbound Marketing Toronto shared with the SES community:

SEW: How do you feel now that Google Penguin 2.0 has arrived? Are you worried about any future algo updates?

SC: Smaller changes than we all expected. This will shake small businesses that have focused on a short-term fix – thin link building.

NK: Algorithm updates certainly can’t be ignored. That said, whenever there are updates, truckloads of available data, blog posts and reviews about the subject come with it – so much so, that I think we could easily get consumed by it all. It’s hard to hit a moving target. The one constant seems to be providing quality content – walking in the shoes of our site visitors and providing information that is valuable to them. I try to worry more about that.

AR: I feel great about it actually! None of the Powered by Search clients got hit by the algorithm update. If you engage in good SEO and content marketing practices you have nothing to worry about.

SES Toronto 2013SEW: SEO or content marketing? Both? Or is SEO content marketing?

SC: Definitely both SEO and content marketing – In fact those two words belong to each other. Content marketing adds great horsepower to SEO. However, quality content is the foundation. Without it, clever SEO and content marketing efforts can go waste.

NK: As an example, link-building has been a big part of SEO. With Link-building being one of the things under Google’s microscope, all signs have been pointing to having to earn links by pushing out valuable and relevant content… content that people would hopefully want to share. So in this way, certainly, SEO and content marketing overlap.

AR: Technical SEO and content marketing work hand-in hand.

SEW: Which social site do you think will be most important this year? Next year? 5 Years?

SC: This year: YouTube; Next Year: Instagram. 5 years: It will depend on the technology. A social media that taps into an all-in-one synchronizer will be the winner, synching YOU and your days with all devices around you:

  • Morning Alarm
  • Commute
  • Day to day schedule
  • Meal suggestions
  • Health care
  • Work-out tracking
  • Banking
  • Online-shopping
  • Messaging
  • Social life
  • Entertainment… on and on.

The one tackles this first in the next five years will be deep in our lives.

NK: The most important social site this year, next year and 5 years from now will always be the one(s) on which our existing and prospective audience hang out. I can’t say what will catch on and stick in the future, but it seems clear that the established platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube will continue to be important…especially as we better understand how to leverage them.

AR: LinkedIn now and in the foreseeable future.
