Online content video views have exceeded 50 billion a month for the first time on record, as 188.2 million Americans watched 52.4 billion online content videos in December. Meanwhile, video ad views have tripled to 35.2 billion in the past year.
Americans watched 47.1 billion online content videos in November 2013, up from 40 billion in November 2012. Meanwhile, video ad views grew to 26.8 billion from 10.5 billion during the same period, according to comScore data.
The latest data from comScore showed that 189 million Americans, 87.1 percent of the U.S. Internet audience, watched 49.1 billion online content videos in October 2013, while the number of video ad views totaled 24.5 billion that month.
According to new data from the comScore Video Metrix service, 182 million Americans watched nearly 41 billion online content videos in May 2013. That's up from 181.9 million Americans, who watched 38.8 billion online content videos in April 2013.
There are several important trends hidden in plain sight in comScore's U.S. Online Video Rankings. Over the past five years, online video views are up 37 percent; video duration is up 148 percent; and time spent watching videos is up 638 percent.
This shake up in the video ad rankings comes during a period when video advertising was breaking records month after month. Americans viewed 11 billion video ads in June 2012 compared to 10 billion in May, and 9.5 billion in April.
