Bing Named NCAA’s Official Bracket Data Partner for March Madness

The search engine will release a data review and a new NCAA bracket-building tool for March Madness.

Microsoft Bing is taking a leap into March Madness with a data partnership with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Under the partnership, Bing will analyze 10 years of raw historical data from NCAA basketball, which provides details about teams, tournaments, win and loss ratios, along with other information. Bing will then turn those data points into actionable insights in order to help basketball fans build a winning bracket during the tournament.

“Bing’s search services will allow fans to have some fun as they access data for their bracket selections,” Keith Martin, managing director of marketing and broadcast alliances at NCAA, said in a statement.

The collaboration will be led by Walter Sun, principal applied science manager at Microsoft. Sun and his team have experience in leveraging Microsoft’s algorithms and machine learning to identify key patterns over the years that contribute to a team’s success.

Bing and NCAA will release the results of the data review right after Selection Sunday. Bing will also debut a NCAA bracket-building tool by then.
