New AdWords Rule Changes on Sites Collecting Personal, Financial Info

If AdWords runs on websites that request payment, financial, or personal information, advertisers must comply with three new rule changes starting May 17, the Inside AdWords blog announced.

The three changes:

  • Personal Information Disclosure: Clearly describe how any personal information you collect is used and make it “easily accessible before site visitors submit their details.” This includes: full name, email address, mailing address, phone number, birth date, national identity, pension, social security, tax ID, health care, or driver’s license number, and mother’s maiden name.
  • Opt Out Disclosure: Describe how people can opt out of direct communications, including emails and phone calls.
  • Use SSL: All advertisers must use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connections when collecting payments and some financial and personal information. This includes credit and debit card numbers, bank and investment account numbers, checking account numbers, wire transfer numbers, and national identity, pension, social security, tax ID, health care, or driver’s license numbers.
