Google-Yahoo Japan Deal May Face FTC Scrutiny

Rakuten, Japan’s largest online shopping mall operator, has asked Japan’s Fair Trade Commission to review the search deal Google cut with Yahoo Japan, which is an independent entity from Yahoo.

In July, Yahoo Japan, the number one Japanese portal, announced plans to use Google’s search and advertising technology to replace its current system as early as this year. The companies agreed to a two-year contract, Bloomberg reports.

“The partnership deserves careful consideration because there is a real possibility that the industry’s overall growth could be adversely affected,” said Hirotoshi Kato, a spokesman at Tokyo-based Rakuten.
