MapQuest Versus The Mapping Upstarts

Competitors Nip at
MapQuest’s Biz
from the Associated Press looks at how mapping leader
MapQuest, owned by AOL, is being
threatened by improved mapping services and mashup features offered by Google,
Yahoo and MSN.

It notes that MapQuest once had satellite views similar to how Google and MSN
now offer but scrapped them as being fun but not that useful. And I agree —
satellite views are largely fun but not that crucial. But in a feature war,
having them is a plus.

MapQuest plans to bring them back later this year. Yahoo still doesn’t have
them, but you’d expect they’ll be coming.
