R.I.P. Delicious, AltaVista, Alltheweb & 5 More Yahoo Products
The hits just keep coming at Yahoo. A day after laying off about 4 percent of employees and shuttering Yahoo Video, a screenshot leaked on Twitter that revealed Yahoo is planning to cut (or “sunset”) eight Yahoo products: Yahoo Picks, AltaVista, Alltheweb, Yahoo Bookmarks, MyM, Delicious, Yahoo Buzz, and MyBlogLog.
The screenshot below (posted on Twitter by Eric Marcoullier, founder of MyBlogLog, which Yahoo bought in 2007 and never did much of anything with) is from an “all-hands meeting” of the Yahoo product team.
Yahoo will also merge other products (FoxyTunes, Events, People Search, Sideline, FireEagle, and one other I can’t make out the logo for), and make Yahoo Deals, Avatars, Alerts, Widgets, Greetings, Babel Fish, Calendar, Address Book, Notepad, and Message Boards into “features.”
Yahoo’s Blake Irving reportedly threatened to fire whoever leaked the slide.
Yahoo’s statement to All Things Digital: “Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond. We continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo! Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others. We will communicate specific plans when appropriate.”
