D.C. Gets a Street View of New Anti-Google Video
Consumer Watchdog is at it again. In the new video “Mr. Schmidt Goes to Washington,” the group demands Eric Schmidt be called before Congress for hearings about the data Google collected with its Street View mapping service cars.
The group has gone as far as to hire a mobile digital advertising truck equipped with stereo sound to screen the video on the streets near Capitol Hill, downtown, and elsewhere in Washington, D.C.
The group also accuses Google of having a secret relationship with the NSA, and this week sent a letter to Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee:
The search giant has a legitimate need to cooperate with the government’s mammoth and secretive code breaking agency in its efforts to defend the integrity of U.S. computer networks. But NSA also has legal power to force Google to hand over the private information of its users. How Google executives handle this potentially conflicted relationship is largely unknown: neither Google nor the NSA are talking.
“This is just the latest in a long list of press stunts from an organization that admits to working closely with our competitors,” said a Google spokeswoman.
The same group showed a “Don’t Be Evil?” cartoon in Times Square in September.
