If you’re a small business owner or CEO of a growing company and require great talent, look no further than the LinkedIn Education section and Student Job Portal.

The Answer to Your Hiring Problems

If used correctly with thought behind it, you will find the exact right fit for your company. LinkedIn’s tool can be useful to find paid interns and entry-level employees in a number of disciplines.

I can attest to how well the service works because I just hired a new executive assistant in the last month using the LinkedIn Student Job Search tool. Before hiring this person, I had literally gone every route you could imagine in an attempt to find the ideal candidate.

I had hired and trained interns to groom into a more stable position, paid for and managed virtual assistants, hired part-time talent – all outside of LinkedIn. Primarily I had found my entry-level and part-time talent initially through standard sources: network referrals, Craigslist, Elance, Guru – even employer networks at NYU, Columbia, Baruch, and many others.

The hiring process was fraught with issues: misrepresentation of skills, unreliable people, laziness, time wasters, and the list goes on. Even those who were intelligent and hard-working just weren’t the right fit for my business. The worst part was combing through thousands of unqualified resumes for over a year.

The minute that LinkedIn announced the launch of the University section in August, I got excited. I knew something great was about to happen because the company has literally owned the recruiting space for large employers and now it was time to provide that service to those of us that aren’t (yet) a Fortune 500.

So, as soon as I was able, I turned to LinkedIn and its Student Job Portal for the first time. You can find LinkedIn’s Education section under Interests.

Within 48 hours of posting my recruitment ad for a marketing assistant on LinkedIn, I received over 100 resumes and had to close my ad because there were so many great candidates.

The talent and professionalism of these university graduates was unbelievable. Many of them had complete LinkedIn profiles, and many included a solid cover letter to accompany their resume and profile.

By my 10th interview, I found the exact person I was seeking. She is now close to completing her first month of work and I couldn’t be more ecstatic.

The Benefits of LinkedIn Education

The benefit to small business owners of LinkedIn Education and the Student Job Portal are tremendous:

  • A small business owner can target exactly who they are seeking.
  • A small business owner will receive hundreds of highly qualified candidates in a short time.
  • It drives up interest of the small business LinkedIn Company Page.

For job-seekers right out of college, using LinkedIn and being in the University job search results is the best way to establish professional credibility, particularly when you have little or no professional experience and want to have your profile recognized. A university grad can gain access and search rank by paying for a Premium LinkedIn subscription.

There are also tremendous benefits for students. As Gina Yocom, my new employee hired from the LinkedIn Student Job Portal, put it:

Having a LinkedIn profile, and a professional and a complete profile is so important because when a company is searching your name – as a job seeker, you want your LinkedIn to be the first thing that pops up, not your Facebook. LinkedIn is the best way to establish professional credibility especially when you have little or no professional experience and want to have your professional profile recognized.

With that said, now more than ever applying for jobs is a numbers game. With the amount of jobs posted on LinkedIn, and the speed at which you can apply to them it is encouraging at first that you can send out so many resumes at one time. However, it becomes discouraging once you see how many jobs you have applied for that seem to be completely lost in cyberspace. I applied for over a hundred jobs on LinkedIn, no exaggeration. Out of those applications, I heard back from six, from those six I interviewed with three.

I found my current job about a month after I upgraded to LinkedIn Premium by applying through a posting as a “Marketing Assistant” that was similar to other companies I had applied for with no response. I was interviewing with a big company at the time that had found me on LinkedIn when my current boss contacted me for an interview. After several leads that fell through, and even more unanswered emails – I was very encouraged about the recent turn of events. The interview went great, and I love my job.

After all of the interviews, cover letters, resume revisions, and hours of applying to jobs – it was all worth it because I found the perfect match for me, and that would not have happened if it wasn’t for LinkedIn.

You could truly miss out on a great opportunity to expand your business with qualified talent if you bypass LinkedIn Education and the Student Job Portal. As an employer, I feel it is your duty to help groom and grow a young person’s career and I am glad to have this chance now because of LinkedIn.

Summary

LinkedIn has done a great job in providing a large pool of top university talent open to any sized employer. This month, LinkedIn is giving away $100 free job recruiting credit to small business employers so give it a try if you’re hiring.
