Bing Top Searches of 2012: Those Kardashian People, iPhone 5 & Beyonce’s Baby

Bing’s Top Searches list is out and reads like a compendium of everything that is wrong with America. The iPhone 5 beat out the 2012 election in news, while Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus were the most searched people of the year.

Bing has announced the top searches in 2012 across a variety of categories, including people, sports stars, news, reality TV and more. What most captured the interest of the American public this year?

Kim Kardashian was the most searched person this year, and she didn’t even have a new sex tape out! Congratulations, Kim K. Sisters Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian failed to make the top 10 for most searched person of the year, though the entire trio made up the top three most searched reality TV stars.

Back to the most searched person of the year list, it went like this:

  1. Kim Kardashian
  2. Justin Bieber
  3. Miley Cyrus
  4. Rihanna
  5. Lindsay Lohan
  6. Katy Perry
  7. Selena Gomez
  8. Jennifer Aniston
  9. Nicki Minaj
  10. Taylor Swift

Bieber had topped last year’s list, thanks to his stable of rabid Beliebers’ stalkerish search habits. Notably absent from the collective consciousness: the President of the United States, Salman Khan, Justice Anthony Kennedy, Ben Rattray, and countless others who undoubtedly changed the world in 2012, yet fail to capture the two-second attention span of the public quite like the pretty, shiny people.

A few celebs fell off the list entirely in 2012, including Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Megan Fox and Lady Gaga. Brace yourselves for a rash of stints in rehab, two-week marriages, pregnancy scares and DUIs as America’s finest attempt to vault themselves back into online relevancy in 2013.

News Flash: iPhone 5 Most Searched, Gangnam Style & Honey Boo Boo Become News

Yes, the iPhone 5 was the top searched story on Bing this year, followed by 2012 Elections and the 2012 Olympics. The public must be credited for taking a greater interest in Hurricane Sandy than that aggravating toddler with the delusional parents, though just barely; Honey Boo Boo and a terrible natural disaster come in fourth and fifth in search volume, respectively.

Bing’s description of this category is as entertaining as the results themselves: “Even if the Mayan calendar is wrong about 2012, news coverage from the year was nothing short of historical.” Or hysterical.

Also in the “news” – and you’re going to have to really stretch your understanding of what constitutes news – rounding out the top 10 most searched stories of the year:

  • Gangnam style dance
  • KONY 2012
  • Academy Awards
  • Kindle Fire HD
  • Facebook IPO

Los Angeles Outranks Las Vegas as Most Searched Destination in the World

The City of Angels stole the crown from Sin City as the most searched destination in 2012, no doubt thanks to this epic viral video of a twilight landing at LAX to a Sugarcult soundtrack.

London, England bumped Paris, France out of the top European spot. Globally, the top searched spots in each area were:

  • Asia = Hong Kong
  • Africa = Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Australia/New Zealand = Sydney, Australia
  • Caribbean = Cancun, Mexico
  • Middle East = Dubai, UAE
  • South America = Salvador, Brazil

Other topics and people that so captured our interest over the past year that we were compelled to do all that finger-typing and search results browsing:
