Google Refuses To Release Data CT Attorney General Wants To Check For Criminal Activity
Outgoing Connecticut AG Richard Blumenthal requested the data collected during Google’s Streetview data recordings and the civil investigative demand had a Friday deadline which Google did not meet, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“We did not want and have never used the payload data in any of our products and services,” Google said, the LA Times stated. “We want to delete the data as soon as possible and will continue to work with the authorities to determine the best way forward, as well as to answer their further questions and concerns.”
What the AG wanted to do with the information has not been detailed. Though incoming US Senator Blumenthal said in a statement, “We will review any information we receive and consider whether additional enforcement steps — including possible legal action — are warranted.”
The LA Times did not distinguish whether the legal action would be against Google or the people who’s information they collected.
Seems like they would be illegal searches – unless information in open wifi can be collected and the state wants Google as their collector. Seems Google can have problems with inadvertently collecting the information in other countries but Connecticut is okay to use it.
Other states have shown interest in the information and Missouri has sent a similar letter.
