Meta hires MongoDB’s CEO to sell you AI alongside the ads

CJ Desai will lead Meta Enterprise Platform as the company expands from helping businesses reach customers into supplying the AI tools they use to work.

Meta has hired MongoDB CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai to lead a new enterprise AI business, with ambitions to supply software to companies that already use its platforms to reach customers.

The company announced Meta Enterprise Platform on September 28. Desai becomes chief enterprise platform officer, reporting directly to Mark Zuckerberg. Its initial product list includes the Muse agent, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code.

Zuckerberg described the division as “the next major pillar of our business.” Desai said it would turn Meta’s AI stack into products and services companies can deploy for their own operations.

A business software executive for a business software push

Desai previously led product and engineering at Cloudflare and spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, including as president and chief operating officer.

MongoDB confirmed his departure and appointed former chief executive Dev Ittycheria as interim CEO while it searches for a permanent successor. The database company also reaffirmed its quarterly and annual guidance.

Meta’s announcement gives no enterprise pricing or availability timetable. It names Muse API and Muse Code without explaining their capabilities or access terms.

Muse already reaches beyond Meta’s apps

A day later, Meta announced Muse for Small Business, adding skills and connectors to its personal agent, available in the US and Canada.

Meta says owners can connect Instagram professional account analytics, Facebook Pages and Meta ad accounts, alongside services including Shopify, QuickBooks, Klaviyo and Canva.

Its suggested tasks include analyzing sales and campaigns, drafting advertising and examining monthly expenses. Those are Meta’s proposed uses; the announcement provides no independent assessment of their accuracy or business results.

Meta says nothing publishes, sends or spends without the owner’s approval. It describes Muse as free for most needs, with subscription plans for additional usage.

Meta is moving closer to the decisions behind ad spending

Connecting campaign data with storefront sales and accounting records gives Meta’s agent a broader role than drafting an ad. In the workflow Meta describes, the same assistant could examine business performance and propose the next campaign.

That creates potential overlap with work agencies and software vendors perform for their clients. The extent will depend on what Meta actually delivers and how businesses use it.

Muse also acts on the customer side of commerce, where Amazon has blocked its shopping agent. Meta’s enterprise push would extend its software into the businesses those customers buy from.
