Instagram will reduce reach for AI influencers that don’t disclose they’re AI

You can still use AI on Instagram. You just can’t use it to invent an entire person and quietly hope nobody notices.

Instagram is introducing a clearer “AI-generated profile” label for accounts built around synthetic people and says it may reduce recommendation reach for profiles that should disclose their AI identity but do not.

The change is focused on accounts where the person presented to users is AI-generated. It does not apply broadly to creators who use AI for captions, graphics or photo editing.

Instagram says properly labeled AI-generated profiles will not be penalized simply for using the label. The reach restriction applies when the platform identifies an account as representing an AI-generated person and that account has not disclosed it.

Reduced distribution could affect visibility in recommendation surfaces such as Reels and Explore.

The policy matters because Instagram is moving beyond disclosure alone and tying AI transparency to distribution. For creators and marketers, that turns labeling from a compliance issue into a potential reach issue.

The distinction is straightforward: AI-assisted content remains acceptable, while undisclosed synthetic identities may face reduced exposure.

Instagram is effectively drawing a line between using AI to create content and using AI to create the person behind the account.
