Discord could put your public messages in Google search from December

Community answers can reach the open web, but admins and members have different controls.

Discord plans to make some public-channel messages available through web search, including Google, from mid-December. Its October 27 announcement gives community owners a way to attract people looking for answers, while members gain controls over which future messages can appear.

The change covers Discoverable Servers, the public communities listed in Discord’s directory that have at least 1,000 members. Private servers and direct messages are excluded. Messages sent before the mid-December rollout will not be included.

Community pages arrive before searchable messages

Every Discoverable Server will have a public Server Web Page from November 16. If administrators have not created one, Discord will publish a default page using the server’s profile.

Those pages can show automated summaries of discussions from November 16 onward. Individual messages follow from mid-December, with a gradual rollout that could take several weeks before the first eligible messages appear online.

For a brand or publisher running a community, that creates a route from a question in search to an answer inside the group. A useful product explanation could introduce someone to the community before they have joined it. Actual search visibility will still need to be assessed after the pages appear.

Admins choose channels, while members choose their messages

Discord’s administrator guidance separates summaries and individual messages into independent controls under Server Settings, Community, Web Presence. Each can use a different selection of public channels, and both are on by default.

Owners and members with Administrator permission can change these settings on desktop or in a browser. Private and role-restricted channels are excluded. Participating public channels receive a label so members can see that their content may reach the web.

A moderation team could therefore allow summaries from a general discussion channel while limiting individual messages to a dedicated help channel. Review both channel lists before November 16; changing one does not change the other.

Members have a separate account-wide setting in User Settings, Data & Privacy. According to Discord’s member guidance, individual-message sharing defaults off in the EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea, and on in most other regions. Teen accounts cannot enable it.

Usernames and avatars will not accompany the messages. Turning off personal message sharing also does not stop the broader channel summaries, which administrators control separately.

Switching off sharing does not erase earlier posts

A member’s setting is applied when they send a message. Turning it off protects subsequent messages; eligible posts sent while it was on can still appear, even if they have not reached a web page yet.

To remove one of those messages, the member must delete it from Discord. That removes it from Discord’s own web pages, but search engines may keep cached or indexed copies for longer and may require a separate removal request.

Administrators face a similar limit: disabling summaries or messages stops new content, while previously published material may need individual removal. The server’s basic web page also stays live while the server remains Discoverable.

Choose the channels and explain the settings to members before opening them to search. That is easier than treating an opt-out toggle as a way to undo everything later.
