Google’s Canvas in AI Mode Appears to Be Rolling Out in India

Google appears to be expanding Canvas in AI Mode beyond the U.S. The feature has surfaced in Google Search's AI Mode and Chrome's New Tab Page compose box in India.

We spotted Canvas in Google AI Mode in India, where the option now appears in the + menu of Google AI Mode and Chrome’s AI Mode compose box. The Chrome placement gives users another way to access the workspace directly from the browser.

Canvas in AI Mode provides a dedicated workspace to organize information, develop plans, and work on projects across multiple sessions. Google has also added support for creative writing and coding tasks. Users can draft documents or create custom, interactive tools within AI Mode, test a prototype, view its underlying code, and refine it through follow-up prompts.

In its March 4, 2026 announcement, Google highlighted interactive dashboards as a Canvas use case, including one that organizes scholarship requirements, deadlines, and award amounts.

In April 2026, Google announced that Canvas and image creation would be accessible wherever users saw the new + menu in Chrome. At the time, the company said the updates were available in the U.S. and would expand to more regions worldwide.

We tested Canvas in AI Mode in both Google Search and Chrome, and it worked in both places. Its appearance in India points to an expansion beyond the U.S., although Google has not announced an India-wide launch. Availability may still vary by account.
