Google Grabs 71% of U.S. April Searches, Up 2% From March; Bing, Yahoo & Ask Lose Ground

Google’s search supremacy is once more reaffirmed as Experian Hitwise’s April figures show a 2% rise to 71% grab of the U.S. search market, while competitors Yahoo, Bing and Ask kept on losing ground from a month ago.

According to Hitwise, Ask.com recorded the most dramatic fall, plummeting 37% to a mere 2.18% market share in April, from an already meagre slice of 3.44% in March. The data collected is based on a sample of 10 million internet users over a four-week rolling periods ending March 27th and May 1, 2010.

It is important to note that the explosion of social media and its impact on purchasing decisions is taking over part of what used to be solely search engine territory.

In a report issued today, Marketing Pilgrim commented that “Bing / Microsoft search did see increase in several verticals but with their overall percentage of searches these ‘gains’ may be just as much the result of Yahoo’s decreasing presence as a search engine as it is bing’s real impact to date.”
