Yahoo: Labor Day Searches Down vs. Last Year [Stats]

Although searches for “labor day” are down 38 percent compared to 2010, plenty of people still searched for Labor Day related terms. What was hot this year, according to Yahoo? Shopping, affordable vacations, and food. Here’s at look at the search trends.

Labor Day 2011

As usual, the big question was “When is Labor Day 2011?” – up 148 percent, with 58 percent of women searching for the answer to this question. As we previously noted, Google, Yahoo, and Bing all answer this question for you at the top of their respective search result pages, rather than making you visit a website.

Other trending questions on Yahoo: “Does Canada celebrate Labor Day?” (yes, but it’s called Labour Day) and “Does FedEx deliver on Labor Day?” (no, they don’t).

Yahoo reported that searches on “labor day” were down 38 percent vs. last year; however, searches for “labor day weekend 2011” grew 1,889 percent. Other trending searches related to Labor Day: “Labor Day telethon,” “Labor Day sales,” and “Labor Day parade.”

Labor Day Shopping

As Labor Day approached, people were busy searching for coupons, lead by Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target, grocery, JCPenney, and Kohl’s. Old Navy, Forever 21, Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Express were among the most searched for clothing brands, while the most searched stores were Walmart, Target, Macy’s, Kohl’s, and Kmart.

Labor Day Food

“Cherry pie” saw an amazing increase in searches, leaping by 9,324 percent in August. Though Labor Day is often associated with barbecue, desserts were definitely top of mind prior to Labor Day, as recipes for peach cobbler, cookies, cake, cheesecake, and Rice Krispie treats were popular searches.

Labor Day Getaways

The long weekend was prime opportunity to take a vacation, and Yahoo searchers were busy looking for deals. “Cheap weekend getaways” searches were up 3,602 percent; “cheap all-inclusive vacation” were up 4,808 percent; and “vacation deals” were up 107 percent the week prior to Labor Day. “Groupon getaways” searches climbed by 60 percent, while “travel distance calculator” climbed 525 percent.
