New Settings Page Fits the Bill for DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo, which calls itself "the search engine that doesn't track you," took to Twitter to announce a new version of its Settings page.

The new page allows users to customize options for Instant Answers, Auto-Suggest, Advertisements, Page Break Numbers, and Page Break Lines.

And, per a reported screenshot of the pre-existing page, the new Settings also removes options for the 0-Click Box, or the box above the results that DuckDuckGo said had useful info; Meanings, which allowed users to choose which meaning is right when searching for ambiguous terms; and site icons, or the small icons that appeared to the left of results.

In addition, the new page also moves up the option for the Auto-Load setting.

duckduckgo-settingsThe new Settings come on the heels of a total site revamp in May, which provided "smarter search, less clutter [and], real privacy," added features like "smarter answers" from the "best sources" developed by its open-source community; more meanings when searching for ambiguous terms to help ensure users get the meanings they want; the ability to view images and videos without leaving pages; "better" searches for restaurants and places; recipe searches; and instant answers for weather.

In addition to not tracking users, DuckDuckGo says it distinguishes itself from Google with those aforementioned "smarter answers," as well as with less clutter, less spam, fewer ads, and an overall cleaner design. DuckDuckGo also says it "doesn't bias search results towards what we think particular users would already agree with."

Founded in 2008, DuckDuckGo raised a Series A round from Union Square Ventures in 2011.

And, in January, SEW reported that DuckDuckGo celebrated 1 billion searches, buoyed in part by revelations about the NSA's PRISM surveillance program and increased interest in the search engine's "anonymous" search functionality.
