google-sketchup-restaurantGoogle has sold its collaborative 3D modeling tool and team to Trimble, a GPS provider. Google said SketchUp saw 30 million activations within the last year, according to a SketchUp blog post announcing the deal. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

“Thanks to Google, more people than we ever imagined possible have been introduced to SketchUp,” wrote John Bacus, SkitchUp product manager. “Thanks to Trimble, we’ll be able to continue to make SketchUp into the tool that we—and you—have always hoped it would become.”

“As part of the SketchUp platform, Trimble will also partner with Google on running and further developing SketchUp's 3D Warehouse, an online repository where users can find, share, store and collaborate on 3D models,” according to a press release. “For the foreseeable future, Google will host and operate the 3D Warehouse for Trimble and together the companies will continue to offer the same capabilities, functions and services that are offered today. The ability for users to submit 3D Buildings for potential acceptance and viewing in Google Earth will be maintained. Currently the 3D Warehouse has almost two million user-generated models.”

Google bought SketchUp in 2006 to bring 3D modeling to everyone. It is most popular among architects and designers.

The sale of SketchUp seems like another attempt to further streamline Google under CEO Larry Page, who has closed or combined more than 30 products in the past year. Most recently, Google shut down Google Related and One Pass.
