Experian Hitwise today announced that Google accounted for 72.17 percent of all U.S. searches conducted in the four weeks ending May 29, 2010. Yahoo! Search, Bing and Ask received 14.43 percent, 9.23 percent and 2.14 percent, respectively.
In addition, search engines continue to be the primary way Internet users navigate to key industry categories. Comparing April 2010 with May 2010, Automotive, Business and Finance, Entertainment, News and Media, Shopping and Social Networking categories showed double-digit increases in their share of traffic coming directly from search engines.
Among the top three search engines, Google delivered the most visits to the Automotive, Health, Shopping and Travel categories year over year. Plus, Google’s percentage of upstream traffic grew for the Automotive, Shopping and Travel categories. Yahoo! Search also saw gains in the Automotive and Shopping categories. And Bing saw triple-digit growth in two categories – Health and Shopping – including a 107 percent increase in the Health category.
Meanwhile, two-word terms comprised the majority of searches, amounting to 23.34 percent of all queries. Three-word phrases comprised 20.51 percent.
