The company said that it would continue to maintain the VirusTotal online malware scanning tool and the VirusTotal team would be operating as an independent entity. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The VirusTotal service allows users to test files and sites for possible malware infections through an online scanning tool.

The company said that the deal with Google would afford it more resources and allow developers to continue to build upon the service. The company did not say in what capacity it would be integrating with Google products.

“VirusTotal will continue to operate independently, maintaining our partnerships with other antivirus companies and security experts. This is an exciting step forward,” VirusTotal said. “Google has a long track record working to keep people safe online and we look forward to fighting the good fight together with them.”

For Google, the VirusTotal purchase builds on an already formidable lineup of web-based applications. The company has recently been reorganizing its application lineup and shutting down its seldom-used projects.

Though the company has been undergoing a “cleaning,” Google has also been making acquisitions. Earlier this summer, the company added London-based QuickOffice to its holdings.
