Both firms are eager to end the dispute, and it was a Yahoo lawyer who has filed for a two week extension. This extension will give the parties more time to file replies in the lawsuit, and let them hold talks outside court.
“The parties are currently engaged in settlement negotiations to resolve this dispute,” wrote Yahoo attorney Kevin Smith in the filing, according to Bloomberg. “The parties believe that a further extension will facilitate settlement.”
The firms are indulging their lawyers in a game of patent ping pong that started in March when Yahoo sued Facebook for infringing 10 of its patents. Facebook disputed the claims and expressed its disappointment.
“We’re disappointed that Yahoo, a long-time business partner of Facebook and a company that has substantially benefited from its association with Facebook, has decided to resort to litigation,” it said in a statement. Disappointment soon turned to action, however, and Facebook countersued Yahoo alleging infringement of 10 patents.
“From the outset, we said we would defend ourselves vigorously against Yahoo’s lawsuit, and today we filed our answer as well as counter-claims against Yahoo for infringing ten of Facebook’s patents,” said a Facebook spokesperson then. “While we are asserting patent claims of our own, we do so in response to Yahoo’s short-sighted decision to attack one of its partners and prioritize litigation over innovation.”
