Gmail Sending Direct Invites

Like some others, I was surprised to get an email notice from Google last week telling me I could
have a Gmail account. I’ve had one since the site was launched last
year courtesy of Google’s PR department (current quota, 73 percent of 1GB!). However, I also signed up as if I didn’t have one to see how long it took for others without some
type of connection to get an invite.

Nearly 11 months later, those who enrolled in an interest list formerly offered on the site are getting the nod to come in. Sign that Gmail is about to go out to the
general public? Sure seems like it, though Google itself says not to assume this is the case. More in this News.com article:
