  • AOL Scores with Newly Enhanced Search Features
AOL has quietly rolled out a major upgrade to its search service, adding new “FullView” links that automatically pull in multimedia, local, news or other types of content to supplement Google-powered web search results. Others have experimented with including non-web search content on result pages, but AOL has really pushed the idea to a new level with this release, and I highly recommend you try it out. More on the new release in today’s SearchDay article, AOL Enhances Search with FullView Results….
  • Google Page Creator Drops Subdomain Feature
Garett Rogers reports that Google Page Creator has removed the feature to “Create a site with a different address.” In the past, there was a link to “Create a site with a different address” enabling you to create a different subdomain on Google Pages. That feature is no longer there. Garett says he doesn’t know why Google removed it, but maybe it had to do with web spammers creating too many spam pages? Just a guess….
  • China.com To Run Google’s Video Ads
Forbes reports that CDC Corps China.com will be running Google’s click to play video ads on its English Channel service. Fang Donglei, COO of China.com said in a statement; “Google’s click-to-play video ads and China.com English Channel, working together, represent a significant opportunity in servicing the needs of the foreign community in China.”…
  • Google 3rd Most Valuable Technology Company
Nathan Weinberg, while at a wedding, reports that Google has passed IBM to be ranked the 3rd most valuable technology company, behind Cisco and Microsoft. Google’s stock is currently trading above $475 per share, so their “market capitalization reached some 145 billion dollars, surpassing the total value of IBM at 139.5 billion.” More details at The Raw Story….
  • Yahoo To Add No Yahoo Directory Tag
Rejoice! I reported at the Search Engine Roundtable that Yahoo! is to add no yahoo directory tag support soon. Yesterday Yahoo added support for the NOODP tag, and based on a WebmasterWorld thread, requesting Yahoo to also support a tag to prevent the Yahoo Directory title and description from showing, Tim Mayer of Yahoo said, they are working on it. He also asked for our input on if they should make “a different tag or should the NOODP tag apply to both YDIR and ODP?”…
  • Charting Google’s Growth By Employees
Philipp Lenssen located this chart that shows the growth of the number of Google employees. You can see that Google has grown from 2,000 in 2004 to more than 9,000 employees in 2006….

  • Watch Google Videos On Your Mobile Device
Spotted on News.com, you can now watch Google Video’s on your mobile phone. This is a third part application created by Scott Robbin (not Google) where you can visit http://srobbin.com/mobilevideo/ on your mobile device, conduct a search and then watch the video. The requirements are: + Your phone has an XHTML-compliant browser + You have enough storage on your phone to hold large files + Your phone’s connection is fast + You have an application on your phone capable of playing AVI or MP4 files…
  • Google Helping Racism By Refusing To Take Down Hosted Blogs
The Inquirer reports that Google refuses to tackle racist blogs hosted on Google’s Blogger platform. These blogs have racist and neo-Nazi content on them from organizations based in New Zealand and Australia. Brian Stokes, co-founder of FightDemBack!, said that most of the time when his organization reports these types of sites to Angelfire and Tripod, he gets a response. But Google has not responded to his requests and flags. There are more details on this at the Sydney Morning Herald….
  • Googling Google And Searching Yahoo
There is a strange feeling of deja vue with the Official Google blog entry ‘Do you “Google”?’ as we’re once again looking at the way in which the word can be used. This last arose back in August over the apparent mis-use of the term by the Washington Post. Apparently we’re allowed to say “I googled him on the well-known website Google.com and he seems pretty interesting.” since it’s clear that I’m using the term in conjunction with the website, but I can’t say “I googled him on Yahoo and he seems pretty interesting.” Very bad apparently. Does anyone but…
