Facebook Mulling Check-Ins Launch In Coming Weeks [Report]
Facebook is set to launch its own version of Foursquare-like check-ins in the coming weeks, CNET reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Localeze Tie-Up?
According to CNET, Facebook has partnered with Localeze for local business listings. This would totally be possible, as Dave Dague, Localeze’s vice president of marketing told us in an interview recently that the company is set for more social-LBS deals “soon.” Localeze is already teaming up with Twitter to provide data for its Twitter Places feature, along with Foursquare, Gowalla and Tom Tom.
API
CNET sources said the check-ins will be made possible through an API for third-party companies that will integrate their data into the Facebook flow. Citing various unnamed sources within the developer community, the publication said the API is being built out “hard core,” while the internal deadline for it would possibly be next week although the company has no specified whether such a deadline could be met.
Events First
The geolocation service could start with localizing events, as Facebook recently acquired events check-in service Hot Potato and hired its founder, Justin Shaffer, now rumored to be moving to Facebook’s headquarters in Palo Alto to head the geolocation move.
Facebook’s reaction to CNET was voiced by spokesman Larry Yu: “We are working on location features and product integrations, which we’ll be launching in the coming months, and we’ll share more details when appropriate.”
