Google is reportedly looking to create a digital newsstand to run on Android smartphones and tablets. Google has initiated talks with major newspaper and magazine publishers about the venture, including Time Inc., Condé Nast, and Hearst Corp.
Media executives told the Wall Street Journal that the timing of a product launch remains “vague.” However, the story is based entirely on anonymous sources, and even acknowledges that the digital newsstand may never materialize. Stephanie Tilenius, Google’s vice president of e-commerce, is reportedly in charge of the effort.
Google is promising publishers it will take less than Apple’s 30 percent cut of periodical app sales via iTunes. Google will also give publishers personal data about app buyers to help them market similar products or services.
“We’ve consistently said we’re talking with publishers about ways we can work together, including whether we can help them with technology for subscription services. We have nothing specific to announce at this time,” Google said in a statement.
