Depending on which source you use, either “Volkswagen Commercial: The Force” or “Chrysler Eminem Super Bowl Commercial – Imported From Detroit” was the best Super Bowl commercial.
The first source is the Viral Video Chart’s list of most contagious global viral ads of the past 24 hours. This chart is a collaboration between Unruly Media and Contagious Magazine. It ranks viral videos and branded content worldwide based on the amount of times content has been shared on Facebook, Twitter and in the blogosphere.
Today, “Volkswagen Commercial: The Force” ranked #1, with 102,187 shares in the past 24 hours.
“Chrysler Eminem Super Bowl Commercial – Imported From Detroit” is ranked #2, with 18,441 shares in the past 24 hours.
However, the Brand Bowl 2011 ranks Chrysler #1 with 32,514 tweets, Doritos #2 with 33,930 tweets, and Volkswagen #3 with 25,674 tweets. Mullen and Radian6 used over 300,000 tweets to determine the rankings.
And CBS News said the top Super Bowl Commercials featured Eminem touting the autos of his hometown Detroit and a pint-sized Darth Vader trying to summon up “The Force.” CBSNews.com staff wrote, “These two commercials for Chrysler 200 (Eminem) and Volkswagen (Darth Vader) have emerged as the clear favorites of Super Bowl XLV watchers, generating the most buzz in cyberspace.”
Now, Volkswagen leaked its commercial on YouTube to build buzz before the kickoff, while Chrysler kept its commercial under wraps until the moment it went on the air.
So, what have we learned? The best practices of social media marketing are still a work in progress. I guess we’ll just have to watch again next year.
