Twitter, Foursquare Set Records During Super Bowl

Super Bowl XLV between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers attracted record television ratings, but Twitter and Foursquare also achieved some major milestones during the big game.

Twitter announced a new record: highest tweets per second during a sporting event. Meanwhile, Foursquare announced that the Super Bowl became the most checked into venue ever, as well as the largest check-in event of all time.

Twitter’s tweets per second record during a sporting event of 4,064 was hit at 10:07:16 p.m ET, shattering the previous high of 3,283 tweets per second during the World Cup when Japan defeated Denmark 3-1 in June. Early touchdowns and the halftime show also beat the old tweets record.

However, it must be noted that Usher was more tweeted about than Packers quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers. Take that for what you will.

The all-time overall record of tweets per second — 6,939 — was set just after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Eve.

Over on Foursquare, Packers fans outnumbered Steelers fans throughout the night. People checked in from Super Bowl parties in all 50 states, plus 125 countries, as well as 13 check-ins from the Vatican.

Foursquare encouraged users to check-in to the largest Super Bowl party ever prior to the game and also offered special badges and a promotional code for NFL merchandise.
