Optimizing 3 Types of Content on YouTube, Flickr, SlideShare

Having trouble ranking your own site’s content? It won’t hurt to help content you've created on other sites with strong domain authority to rank well for similar keywords in search - making sure content is branded so people know who to credit.

Everyone’s primary goal in search optimization is to get their own site’s content to rank first (or as close as possible to first) for specific keywords. If, however, you are having a bit of trouble doing that, it doesn’t hurt to help content you have created on other sites to rank well for similar keywords in search – just make sure that content is branded well enough so people know who to credit for it.

The following are three different types of media you can optimize on other networks with strong domain authority.

1. YouTube Videos

YouTube is owned by Google, hence videos on their network are a shoe-in for ranking well in search results. The following parts of your YouTube video details are used for the video page’s SEO optimization.

  • SEO Title: Your video page’s most important SEO element is the video title itself. This is where you will want your brand name and keywords if you can fit them both together. YouTube will append – YouTube to the end of the title.
  • Meta Description: Your video page’s meta description is pulled from the video description you enter. This one gets a little tricky as some people like to include their link first to get clicks from their videos to their website. But if you can include that plus a keyword-enhanced description within 160 characters, you’re set.
  • Meta Keywords: Google may not care about meta keywords, but be sure to use them anyway, even if it is just for enhancing your chance of being found on YouTube itself. The tags for your video are used as the meta keywords for the video page. YouTube separates keyword phrases by space, not comma, so be sure to put quotes around a keyword phrase.
  • H1 Tag: YouTube uses your video’s title again in the H1 tag, sans the -YouTube.

Also, don’t forget to use YouTube’s own keyword tool for keyword ideas based on video searches.

2. Flickr Photos

  • SEO Title: Your image page’s SEO title uses the title of your image. Flickr will append | Flickr – Photo Sharing to the end of the title.
  • Meta Description: Your image page’s meta description is the description of the image. The image description is also a great place to add your link – you can use anchor text for the link back to your website, but it is a nofollow link which makes the goal of it traffic vs. keyword optimization.
  • Meta Keywords: The meta keywords are derived from the image’s tags. These tags also help users searching for iamges on Flickr, so be sure to include some good ones.
  • H1 Tag: Flickr uses your image’s title again in the H1 tag.

If you want to use your images for link building (assuming they are all of your own creation), then upload them with Creative Commons rights, and in your image description (after the important first 160 characters), note that anyone can use the image freely if they link back to your website using the following link and anchor text. It can be a great way to share images that bloggers might use in their posts, infographics, and other graphic content.

3. SlideShare Presentations

Have any PowerPoint presentations that you’d like to share from webinars, conference speaking sessions, and other events? SlideShare is the network to use, and the following will help you optimize those presentations for search.

  • SEO Title: The SEO title for your presentation page is simply the title of your presentation. SlideShare doesn’t append their name to the title, so feel free to use the full 70 characters as desired.
  • Meta Description: The meta description for your presentation page is the presentation’s description. You can use up to 3,000 characters for SlideShare, but of course, only the first 160 will count. This description doesn’t seem to be displayed on the page itself.
  • Meta Keywords: Meta keywords for your presentation page are derived from the presentation tags that you enter. There is a limit of 20.
  • H1 Tag: SlideShare uses your presentation’s title again in the H1 tag.

Although the links do not count for SEO value, you can include links in your PowerPoint presentation that will be clickable when people are viewing your presentation on Slideshare. Be sure to include those to get traffic back to your website.
