In August, Excite began the first phase of an ambitious plan to enlarge itssearch index to 250 million web pages and improve the relevancy of its searchresults. Inktomi has been selected to take over from Excite in powering AOL NetFind and AOL's other search properties, including international versions of AOL NetFind. No changeover date for AOL NetFind has been announced, but Inktomi says the switch is likely to happen later this summer. For the time being, AOL NetFind continues to be powered by Excite. AOL is also apparently testing a new AOL Search service that will integrate results from across the web and from its own content. NewHoo Becomes Netscape Open Directory

Netscape has acquired the volunteer-compiled NewHoo web directory, which has been rebranded as the Netscape Open Directory. It is currently being made available through Mozilla.org and will be offered later within the Netscape portal site. The announcement came on Nov. 18, and terms of the deal were not disclosed. Hotbot has moved its search box from center stage, with new channels being featured more prominently. The normal favorites are here, such as news, sports and travel. However, rather than an alphabetical listing, HotBot has organized them into common interest areas.
