Search Engine Standards Project: Background

The Search Engine Standards Project was created in Feb. 1999 by Search Engine Watch editor Danny Sullivan in hopes of fostering communication between search engines, in order to achieve common standards.

The project managed to get one standard about a site search command established, though not all search engines today (as of mid-2002) follow this.

The project was closed in mid-2001 due to a lack of interest among search engines. Information about the project is being left online for those interested in its history.
