In a move that is likely aimed at further bulking up Google Offers, Google has acquired Zave Networks, a platform that lets customers redeem digital coupons and local businesses integrate loyalty programs. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Zave Networks Acquisition: What Google Gets
“We’re thrilled to welcome the Zave Networks team to Google. They have developed an impressive platform to connect consumers with coupons, special offers and reward programs for their favorite businesses, and we look forward to their joining our commerce team,” Google said in a statement.
Zave billed itself as a “global point-of-sale platform for the exchange of non-cash value. One that enables consumers to use a wide variety of digital discounts, offers and values to buy the products they want right at the same stores where they shop everyday.”
“When we had the opportunity to join Google, we felt it was the perfect fit for our company and the perfect opportunity to rapidly drive the deployment and use of our platform to the next level,” the Zave team wrote in an announcement on the website.
Putting the Pieces Together: Offers, Wallet, and Zave
Two other acquisitions this year, The Dealmap and Punchd, also seem aimed at strengthening Google Offers, Google’s answer to Groupon’s daily deals service, and hint at coming integration with Google Wallet, Google's Android-powered mobile NFC payment system. The fact that Google was promoting a daily deal on its homepage last week was also seen as a statement from Google that it’s serious about making Google Offers succeed where others have failed (Facebook) or are scaling back (Yelp).
Google Offers is also getting closer to launching in even more cities. In addition to Austin, Boston, Denver, Seattle, Washington, D.C., Offers will expand to Atlanta, Baltimore, Brooklyn, Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Fort Worth, Houston, Indianapolis, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Miami, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, San Jose, St. Louis, and St. Paul.
Zave Networks is Google’s 19th acquisition of 2011.
