Egypt Shuts Down Internet, SMS

Two days after blocking Twitter, and a day after reports that Facebook and Google were blocked off and on, major news outlets including the AP and Reuters have reported “severe outages” in Cairo while others reports suggest the government has shut down the entire Internet.

One major ISP told the AP that no service was going in or out of the country after 12:30 a.m. local time, just hours before a planned massive anti-government protest. BlackBerry Internet service and text messaging is also unavailable.

Twitter is filled with reports of outages and real-time updates about police actions and warnings of a pending massacre orchestrated by an elite special operations counterterrorism force the government has deployed.

CNN’s Ben Wedeman recently tweeted: “No internet, no SMS, what is next? Mobile phones and land lines? So much for stability” and “Will #Egypt totally cut communications with the outside world?”
