New in Gmail: Display Ads

Next time you're using Chrome and get one of your new Gmail message notifications, you might notice another new addition when you visit your inbox: a display ad.

Google began testing the addition of display ads in Gmail Jan. 21. Here's what it looks like:

"We're always trying out new ad formats and placements in Gmail, and we recently started experimenting with image ads on messages with heavy image content," Google told Search Engine Land in a statement.

Gmail is part of the Google Display Network, which also includes Google Finance, Google Maps, Blogger, and more than 1 million partners. Google last year projected display would bring in $2.5 billion in revenue for all of 2010.

Google has been pushing display hard of late, even erecting a billboard in Times Square last year.
