Chinese Portal Sina Drops Google As Search Provider

Google stopped censoring results in China in January 2010 before eventually pulling out of mainland China altogether. However the search giant still had a presence as the back-end search provider for China Internet portal, Sina.

As of this week, according to a Wall Street Journal report, Sina is in the process of dropping Google in favor of their own search service, thereby diminishing Google's Chinese presence even further.

Last November, the CEO of Sina, Charles Chao noted that Sina was looking for alternatives to Google, who stopped censoring search results in China last year. If Google moved from mainland China to Hong Kong last year, why is this coming out now?

Well, Google entered intro syndication contracts with various Chinese web portals. When the terms of the contract were fulfilled, Google chose to stop censoring the results, as it did on it's main site in China.

Google representatives are not commenting on the contract with Sina. Instead, Google maintains they are continuing on their promise to not provide censored search results to their syndicated partners in China after the terms of their original agreements had been fulfilled.
