Nielsen NetRatings European Search Engine Ratings: Sept. 2003

Shows top search engines in Europe for Sept. 2003 based on figures from Nielsen NetRatings.

Below are figures showing popular search-oriented web site networks in Europe, based on figures provided by Nielsen//NetRatings. Before viewing the actual figures, please read the commentary below to understand more about how the statistics are compiled and what exactly they mean.

Data Source & Demographics

Nielsen//NetRatings has panels of web surfers in various countries. These web surfers have meters on their computers, which monitor the web pages they view. This metered information is compiled to produce results. Figures on this page are for combined home and work web surfing, unless otherwise noted. They show what percentage of the entire internet audience in each country visited a particular web site or network of sites. Because a person may visit more than one site, the figures exceed 100 percent.

Web Site Networks

The figures below combine traffic from various individual web sites into a single figure for a particular network. For example, in the UK, Yahoo operates the Yahoo Mail web site, the Yahoo UK Search site and the Yahoo UK Finance site. Traffic from UK web surfers to any of these sites is combined to make the overall “Yahoo” figure shown in the UK chart below.

Similarly, visits from those in the UK to the global Google.com web site, the Google UK web site or even the Google Germany web site would be combined into an overall figure for Google’s UK-based traffic.

Non-Search Traffic

The figures below are for networks classified by Nielsen//NetRatings as being search engines, portals or community web sites. Mixing various sites like this makes it impossible to say which of the networks shown truly has the broadest search-specific reach.

For example, the Google network is very search-centric. Most visitors going to its sites can be reasonably considered to be searching the web, since that’s the main thing that Google offers. In contrast, a portal network such as Yahoo may include some non-search traffic, such as those checking on mail. A community network, such as UK’s Friends Reunited, will have virtually no search-specific traffic.

Ideally, the charts below would only show figures for search-specific traffic, but these are not yet released by Nielsen//NetRatings for Europe, as they are for the United States. Later in 2003, search-specific figures for Europe should be available.
