Alam Ara, First Indian Film With Sound, Celebrated with Google Doodle

“Alam Ara” (which means “The Light of the World”) was the first movie featuring sound in India’s history, but no original prints of the film have survived to present day due to a fire. It debuted March 14, 1931 in Bombay, and to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the movie, Google India has posted a “Alam Ara” movie theater-themed Doodle:

Reportedly, the film was so popular that police were called to control the huge crowds. Based on a play, the movie is about an aging king and a rivalry between two queens over who will bear the king’s heir. It featured the first song and soundtrack in Indian cinema history.
