Summly is a summarization tool that was created in 2010 by teenage entrepreneur Nick D'Aloisio. Using natural-language algorithms and machine learning, the app condenses news articles into 400-character dispatches for consumption on mobile devices.
"We're thrilled to introduce this game-changing technology in our first mobile application," said Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer. "And, with the immersive imagery of our virtually endless newsfeed, the new Yahoo app has both great technology and beautiful design front and center."
With the launch Yahoo has paired its preexisting features with Summly. The Yahoo app lets users search for news topics they are interested in and displays summarized versions of chosen articles.
The app will also feature Yahoo's recently announced endless newsfeed. Endless newsfeed gives Yahoo users a live updating newsfeed. The feature was originally launched on Yahoo's homepage last February.
Mayer also touted an improved search experience, featuring "better video and image search."
The Yahoo mobile app is avaiable for the iPhone in the App Store. Yahoo has yet to release an Android version.
The purchase of Summly followed in Yahoo's recent trend of focusing on core technology and smaller acquisitions. Over the past year the firm has made a variety of purchases of smaller start-ups. Acquisitions came from sectors key to Yahoo's future such as mobile, search, and mail.
