Rosetta: Google’s Penguin Had a Positive Impact on Rankings of Sites Studied

Rosetta logoContrary to the overwhelming sentiment that Penguin is a heartless site destroyer, digital and direct interactive agency Rosetta published a case study and series of insights demonstrating a positive effect on site rankings they attribute to it.

In collaboration with BrightEdge, Rosetta analyzed 7 client and 23 client competitor sites in Consumer Product & Retail, B2B, and Financial Services. Rosetta’s clients experienced an 11.31 percent growth in rankings, while competitors only saw a 6.61 percent growth.

It makes sense that larger, better managed sites would grow out of the wreckage of sites hit by Penguin, but it’s good to see a reminder that some sites are indeed benefiting from good management and solid strategy. For the full set of insights, see Rosetta’s Google Penguin Review.

Shar VanBoskirk Adds Search Marketing to Forrester Waves

Forrester logoForrester’s Shar VanBoskirk recently announced she’ll be adding search marketing agencies and SEO platforms to her Waves, in which she performs detailed analyses of technology vendor and service providers in different sectors.

She lists several companies as examples of the types of SEO platforms and software she’ll be covering, though noticeably absent are more forward-looking, truly automated big data SEM solutions like BloomReach and DataPop.

As Bryan Eisenberg pointed out last week in his ClickZ column, SEO software reaches far beyond automated reporting and bidding tools. In Claiming Your Unfair Advantage, he points to four distinct types of tools marketers must be aware of, if they are to leverage and make best use of the data available to them: analytics tools, predictive analytics tools, data-driven automation tools, and adaptive learning & optimization tools.

VanBoskirk is currently seeking input on the capabilities and features she should be evaluating; see her blog post for information on how to connect.
