Walmart has recognized that its customers are mobile, with consumers increasingly using their smartphones and tablets to shop online. The discount retail giant, which reported $419 billion in net sales last year, is no doubt hoping Mayer will help Walmart increase its mobile business.

Walmart has strategically bought mobile- and social-focused startups in the past year, including Small SocietyOne Riot, and Kosmix.

“I have long been a customer and admirer of the company. Walmart is an amazing story of entrepreneurship and, as one of the world’s most powerful brands, touches millions of lives every day,” Mayer said in a statement. “I look forward to contributing to Walmart’s continued growth, success, and innovation in the years to come.”

Mayer, the youngest woman to ever appear on Fortune’s list of the 50 most powerful women in business (at No. 38 in 2011), was the first female engineer hired at Google in 1999 and one of the first 20 employees. Prior to her current role, which began in 2010, she was Google’s vice president of search products and user experience, working on products including Gmail, Google News, Google Maps, Google Earth, and Google Instant.

This would be Mayer’s first board seat at a major corporation. She also serves on other boards – San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco Ballet, New York City Ballet, and Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum – and is one of the most public representatives of the Mountain View-based company.
