Google is set to launch a new budget Nexus Tablet aimed at the same market as Amazon’s Kindle Fire, according to reports.
Google plans to launch its own-brand tablet device through a new online store by the end of the year, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing an unnamed source. The new Google tablet is currently being made by “existing partners” such as Samsung and Asus, the WSJ reported.
If true, the new tablet store wouldn’t be the first attempt by Google to sell its products directly to consumers, previously having attempted such a feat with its Nexus One smartphone.
Released in 2010, Google attempted to sell the HTC-made device directly through a purpose built online store, however a lack of consumer interest led the company to give up mere months after it opened.
Earlier this week, a report by the DigiTimes, claimed Google was teaming up with Asus to build an own brand tablet. The DigiTimes reported the own-brand tablet would see Google take on Amazon’s Kindle Fire, targeting the budget end of the tablet market.
