Google Launches "Schemer" Project & Activity Finder

by ,  Comments

Google has launched a content-sharing tool that's all about finding new things to do in the real world. This project lets users create, share, find, discuss, and track progress on "schemes" for goals, activities, and adventures.

TechCrunch first noticed in November that Google seemed to be playing with the Schemer name and domain. Now that product has launched into its invite-only beta phase, unveiling itself as a real-world activity-sharing site.

Google describes the site as being all about discovery. As the Schemer Google+ page puts it:

Whether it’s exploring a new city, checking out a friend’s movie recommendations, or just finding new activities for your weekends, Schemer lets you discover new things to do, share schemes with friends, and make the most of your day.

All this is coming from "a scrappy team of Google engineers who wanted to help people do fun stuff in the real world." In other words, this is probably a 20 percent time project, proving that Google is committed to allowing innovation.

While the site labels itself as requiring an invite, it seems that some Google-provided links will get you right in. Once you've made it to the site, you can do searches for activities based on keywords, interest, location, or category. You can also check out the most recent and most popular posts:

You can mark schemes as done, track the schemes you want to do, make comments just about anywhere you'd like, and even make and share your own plans. Almost every element can be completed within a few clicks, including creating, labeling, and describing a scheme of your own. I made this goal in about a minute:

Quitting energy drinks, on the other hand, won't be so easy. Want to give support, inspire others to do this task, or join with me? The pages are set up for that too. Check it out or connect with me on this scheme page.

You register for Schemer with your Google+ profile and can share the content via Google+ or email. You can also quickly connect with other Schemers via Google+.

Are you going to join Schemer? If you've tried it, what do you think it?
