Today, on Veteran’s Day in the U.S., Google, Bing, Ask.com, and Dogpile.com have posted special logos and pictures saluting military heroes. In addition to a Doodle, Google used the opportunity to tout tools geared toward helping veterans and their families.
This year’s Veteran’s Day, which falls on November 11, 2011 (11/11/11), might have a little extra added meaning for some, as this holiday, formerly known as Armistice Day, originally commemorated the end of World War I in the 11th month, on the 11th day, at the 11th hour, of the year 1918.
Google’s Veteran’s Day 2011 Logo
Google has posted a new Doodle, in which the Google letters appear as clouds in the sky, except for the “l” which comes in the form of a tree, wrapped in a yellow ribbon, which seems to reference the 1970s song “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” by Tony Orlando and Dawn. Yellow ribbons have historically symbolized an absent loved one, usually due to military service.
Google Touts Resources for Veterans
Google also shared some resources the company has created to help veterans and families of veterans.
- VetConnect: This free tool, which has the goal of helping the veteran community connect on Google+, was created by veterans and family of veterans who work at Google.
- Google Veterans YouTube Channel: Videos offer tips and stories, which can be uploaded by veterans, family members, or anyone wishing to post a tribute.
- Resume Builder: This tool “generates an auto-formatted resume that can be easily edited, saved and downloaded to share with potential employers,” says Google. As we reported yesterday, Google also has helped create a job search engine for veterans.
Google is also working on Tour Builder, which will be powered by Google Earth, and will allow veterans to make 3D tours, with maps, photos, and videos, based on their service histories.
