Google Doodles for Emile Berliner & Annie M.G. Schmidt Birthdays

While the 2011 Doodle 4 Google competition winner is being highlighted in the U.S., two other special logos done by the Google Doodle pros are highlighted in other countries today. On Google Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the 160th birthday of inventor Emile Berliner is being celebrated, while Annie M.G. Schmidt’s 100th birthday is recognized on Google Netherlands.

Emile Berliner Google Doodle

Born in Germany on this date in 1851, Emile Berliner is best known for inventing a way to accurately record and reproduce sound using record discs, and could be viewed as the grandfather of the entire recording industry. The gramophone and records are highlighted in Google’s logo.

He is also known for his contributions to improving the telephone and his work on helicopters. Berliner moved to the U.S. in 1870 and became a citizen in 1881. 

Annie MG Schmidt Google Doodle

Born on this date in 1911, Dutch writer Anna Maria Geertruida Schmidt is best known for her children’s books, especially the featured characters in today's Doodle which come from her “Jip and Janneke” series, winner of a Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1988. Schmidt also wrote poetry, songs, books, plays, musicals, and television and radio scripts.
