Extreme Searching Confusion

"I appreciated your review of The Extreme Searcher's Guide to Web Search Engines. However, I wondered if you were referring specifically to the new edition? We have the 1999 edition already, and I'm not sure if buying the new version is worthwhile given our limited acquisitions budget. I would appreciate your opinion on the amount of change in between editions and the importance of obtaining the new edition. My guess is that others would appreciate your take on this distinction as well."

Thank you for the heads-up, Freya -- the sound you're hearing is my hand slapping my forehead. Yes, the review was for the 2nd edition of the book, which has just recently been published by CyberAge books. And the answer to your other question is a resounding yes -- the second edition is definitely a worthwhile purchase, even if you have the first edition.

More than two years passed between editions, and the world of web search changed dramatically during that time. The 2nd edition of the book has been completely updated to reflect the current features offered by each reviewed engine. There are new chapters on "common searching options" and one devoted to the FAST search engine. The metasearch engine chapter has also been completely overhauled.

In short, it's essentially a new book, even though it's labeled as a second edition, and a worthy addition to your library.

The Extreme Searcher's Guide to Web Search Engines is one of the most comprehensive, authoritative and just downright useful guides to what goes on under the hood of the major search services.

Search Headlines

NOTE: Article links often change. In case of a bad link, use the publication's search facility, which most have, and search for the headline.
