Open Directory Adds Previews Allowing Users To Visualize Links

The Open Directory Project now includes a red toggle ball on all its pages to activate thumbshots or screenshots of Web pages in thumbnail sizes.

Shopping.com Leverages Switchboard’s LocalClicks Performance-based Advertising to Promote Products to Local Searchers

Shopping.com has created a customized, co-branded version of its website for Switchboard that has been programmed directly into Switchboard Yellow Pages results. Through a variety of paid LocalClicks links, interwoven with the local business listings in the top-searched retail categories on the Switchboard site, users are now able to easily access related Shopping.com product specifications, pricing and availability information as well as ratings and reviews from its Epinions community.

Dogpile Toolbar Wins Award for Best Browser Toolbar Plug-In

Dogpile placed highly within two of the 12 categories in PC World’s “Web Stars: Best of the Web” feature published in the February 2004 issue of the magazine. The Dogpile Toolbar took top honors in the Browser Toolbar Plug-Ins category to win the “PC World Best Bet Award” in that category. Additionally, Dogpile was the first runner-up in the Search Engines category, behind category winner Google.

Yahoo Establishes Yahoo Research Labs

The group will pursue a portfolio of topics that include pay for performance search, web search, vertical businesses and platform technologies. The organization will be led by Yahoo’s Head and Principal Scientist Dr. Gary William Flake, former chief science officer of Overture and founder of Overture Research.

Google Enhances AdWords Tools

Google launched today a free conversion tracking tool for AdWords campaigns. Advertisers will now be able to determine not only the total value generated by each type of conversion, but also the number of instances of each particular event: page views, sales, leads, and sign-ups.

Alacritude Renamed HighBeam Research, Unveils New Service Targeting Individual Online Researchers

The service is designed for individuals engaged in serious business, educational and personal research and delivers convenient, customizable access to the free Web, selected registration and subscription online services and the HighBeam Research proprietary eLibrary database.

Espotting Replaces Overture To Provide Paid Listings For 2nd Largest German Isp

Under the new, exclusive deal, Espotting’s top five German listings appear on freenet search result pages under the heading ‘Sponsoren-Links’ (Sponsored Links).

Vivmsimo named eWeek Labs Analyst’s Choice

Focusing on the importance of categorization in enabling users to find information faster, Jim Rapoza, Director of eWeek Labs, wrote “Probably the biggest difference between Clustering Engine and other categorization applications is that Clustering Engine does not require a pre-existing taxonomy, nor does it require training sets of preclassified content. Instead, the application analyzes returned search results and infers categories based on the content.”
