- Google's Webmaster Central Adds A Blog
The folks who are responsible for Webmaster Central, the old Google Sitemaps, announced at the Google Blog that they have a blog specifically for Webmasters at http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/. This blog will be more focused on the technical side of things, from what it appears. Bloomberg reports and the Wall Street Journal reports that Google has asked the SEC for an exception to a rule that would classify them to be regulated as a mutual fund company. Basically, if a company's securities make up more than 40 percent of their assets, then they can be classified as mutual fund company. Google's plea to the SEC was "that it is not in the business of investing, reinvesting, or trading in securities." Right now no one knows if Google will be granted the exemption.... - Google, Yahoo, & MSN Update Search Results
It appears that all the major search engines have been reported to be updating their indexes in some way. Google is updating back links at some of the Google data centers. Yahoo has been recently reported to have updated its algorithm or index, although there is no official word from Yahoo on this as of yet. And MSN Search has confirmed that an update has occurred to their index recently. While Google's update may not be represented in the index, Yahoo and MSN's updates have reports that the search results have indeed changed. Techcrunch reports that now available at http://beta.search.live.com/video/. We reported in mid March that the service was rumored to be released in April, but now it is August. I did a search on basketball and the first result returned men streaking at a basketball game. I guess it wasn't the most relevant result, but it was at a basketball game. Tim Converse, the web spam fighter at Yahoo Search, wrote a very interesting blog entry explaining aggregation spam.
