Mike McDonald of WebProNews Videos interviewed me recently at OMS 2010, aka SES San Diego, for a story entitled, "The Death (Or Redefinition) Of SEO Discussed." As you will see in the video interview, the rumors of SEO's death are for the birds.

Or, as Mr. Praline put it in Monty Python's Dead Parrot Sketch, "This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!"
But, this doesn't necessarily mean that SEO is dead -- IF it doesn't squawk about optimizing videos, news, images, news, and maps to be found in universal search results. And no one will say SEO has passed on IF it moves and starts optimizing fresh blog posts, Facebook pages, and live updates from Twitter for real-time search results.
Now, some will argue that this isn't "search engine optimization" anymore. But I'd argue that their feet are nailed on their perch. For example, just Google the search term, Tiger Woods. I just did and found news results, image results, video results, and blog posts on the first page of universal search results.
If you were Ari Fleischer, who has been hired to help Woods recast his image, you couldn't get away by saing, "Sorry, I'm only responsible for optimizing the pages on TigerWoods.com, the official site of Tiger Woods."
If you did blurt out something stupid like that, you'd be dead. As dead as the era of 10 blue links.
On the other hand, if you take responsibility for optimizing all of your digital assets, then the rumors of SEO's death will have been greatly exaggerated. The key to keeping SEO alive and kicking is to move as quickly as the search engines are changing.
