Okay, so this seems more like a continuing trend than breaking news. But the comScore Video Metrix service today reported that 183 million U.S. Internet users watched online video during May 2010. But the new news is that YouTube.com achieved record levels of viewing activity during the month with an all-time high of 14.6 billion videos viewed and surpassing the threshold of 100 videos per viewer for the first time.
There are other news nuggets buried at the bottom of the announcement:
- 84.8 percent of the total U.S. Internet audience viewed online video.
- 144.1 million viewers watched 14.6 billion videos on YouTube.com (101.2 videos per viewer).
- The average Hulu viewer watched 27.0 videos, totaling 2.7 hours of video per viewer.
- The duration of the average online video was 4.3 minutes.
Okay, now that the news has been reported, let's jump to the real question on everyone's mind: What is everyone watching?
The most popular video of the past month is a music video by Shakira featuring Freshlyground performing Waka Waka (This Time for Africa). It's the Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Song.
Okay, even I admit that I've been watching the 2010 FIFA World Cup on weekends -- and the evening replays on ESPN2 during weekdays. But I've been amazed at how a sporting event that American's aren't supposed to be focused on has penetrated business conversation even during working hours.
I've already written about "2010 FIFA World Cup Commercials and YouTube Video Ads" that are capitalizing on this surge of interest. -- which came even before the USA advanced in dramatic fashion to the second round of the World Cup.
In fact, NIKE FOOTBALL WRITE THE FUTURE - FULL LENGTH VERSION, which was uploaded on May 17, 2010, now has 16,860,531 views.
It's worth noting that Landon Donovan of the USA isn't featured in the video above, but Wayne Rooney of England is. Hey, I'm not waving the flag. I'm just making an observation.
